Mathilda Mary Shelley was the second daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley. She was born on August 15, 1819, in Naples, Italy, while her parents were living there. Mathilda had an older half-sister, Fanny Imlay, from Mary's previous relationship.
Mathilda's childhood was marked by tragedy. Her mother died shortly after giving birth to her, and her father drowned when she was just four years old. Mathilda was raised by her aunt and uncle, Claire Clairmont and William Godwin Jr.
Mathilda attended various schools and had a strong interest in literature. She was an accomplished writer herself and wrote a novel titled "The Fields of Fancy," which was published posthumously in 1951.
However, Mathilda's life was cut short when she died unexpectedly at the age of 23 on June 24, 1841. The cause of her death is unknown, but it is believed to have been a brain tumor.
